Synchronization
Our network is set up to automatically back up and synchronize all the files that are stored in My Documents. What this means is all the files in My Documents exist both on the De Smet Network (k:drive) and on the local computer (c:drive). There is also a database that tracks file additions, subtractions, and revisions. This means that you can be logged on to the network, create and modify a word document and save it on the network. When you log off the file will also be copied to your computer. You will then automatically have all of your work on your laptop computer so that you can work on the files at home. When you return to school and login the synchronization process will replace the older network file with the revised copy you edited at home. There are many advantages of this setup, including: being able to work at home and not worry about having multiple versions of a file, as well as the peace of mind that comes from knowing your data is backed up.
All students should check that synchronization is working and error free. To do this click on the start button and type "sync".   Next, hit enter or click on the Sync Center icon that appears at the top...

When you get to school you should turn your computer on and login. This will automatically run the synchronization protocol. Synchronization happens automatically throughout the day but it is strongly recommended to run it manually and keep track of it on your own. The Sync Center will look like this when there are no concerns and there will be some red when there are things that need to be resolved.

Occasionally the Sync Center will have a conflict and two versions of a document are created. At this point you will be asked what to do. You will have 3 choices:
- Keep both versions
- Keep the local version
- Keep the network version
Typically you should choose choice 2 - however think about what has happened in the last few minutes and use some good judgment.
