October
The purpose of this newsletter is to point out a few things that will help students with their computer problems and some trends that we are seeing in the IT Center that are problems.
- Changing passwords: You can’t change your password when you are off campus. It must be done when you are at school.
- Shutting down: Holding your power switch to shut down your computer is the improper way to shut it down. That can cause corruption of the operating system. Your computer should be shut down properly every night.
- Backpacks: Your backpack should not exceed more than 10-15% of your body weight and the top of the backpack should be 1-2” below the top of the shoulders.
- E-Mail: If you can’t send emails, your email is probably full and it must be cleaned up. Both Outlook and the webmail must be cleaned up.
We also want to remind you of some of the computer policies that are covered in the handbook:
- Damage to a loaner may incur a fine
- File sharing programs or any peer to peer software is prohibited
- Do not go to blocked websites like facebook. (this includes before & after school). Will result in JUG
Fun Fact of the month: We see a lot of passwords and according to www.mashable.com many of them are among the top 25 worst passwords (because they are easy for somebody to guess). Some of them are “password”, “123456”, “12345678”, “qwerty”, “111111” , “654321”, and “qazwsx”. If you have one of these or something close to it, we highly advise you to change your password.
IT Center stats for the first month of school: 286 cases created. 28 accidental damage cases and 54 virus’.
